Recently, SLI highlighted Arna Shines – CEO and owner of Short Vowel Nation and author of See Say Spell. The interview with Shines was part of SLI’s literacy initiative, where we encourage reading and social awareness.
What is unique about See Say Spell? It is a foundational tool for literacy, reinforcing the head start all children need.

Upon founding Servant Leaders Institute, literacy was and remains an area of care and concern. As we strive to support and encourage meaningful leadership throughout communities, we believe leaders must promote and advance literacy efforts. We believe so because of the correlations between low literacy and poverty, low literacy and crime, low literacy and health disparities, etc.
See Say Spell teaches the short vowel sounds. This is one of the first major reading skills students learn in school. Therefore, it must be emphasized for mastery in order to move to the next level of reading. Shines also affirms the effectiveness of See Say Spell as a foundational tool for struggling readers who are older than five- and six-year-olds usually learning short vowel sounds.
See Say Spell simply puts the short vowel sounds in a mini, yet powerful booklet containing the following:
▪ explaining how pictures make us think of sounds
▪ saying a picture with a short vowel sound
▪ saying the written sound
▪ spelling the sound
▪ including a sound grid for each short vowel
When asked about the difference between using resources online via Google and YouTube versus See Say Spell, Shines acknowledged good online resources and emphasized the significance of having a learning tool you can touch and hold.
