Hello, friends!
Thank you for taking the time to read this message during this busy time of year. I founded Servant Leaders Institute in 2019, because I wanted to give back what so many have given me through education, awareness, and advocacy. Because of generous supporters, Servant Leaders Institute has been able to do just that through its initiatives – youth leadership, book giveaways, and teacher support.
Currently, I teach full time while conducting the operations of SLI. SLI is conducting its first leadership cohort to enhance and support the advocacy skills of teenage girls. This cohort assists them in building community, advocating for issues that impact them, and producing a published document. Thus far, the cohort has had various workshops on advocacy skills and the revision of education policies. The leadership cohort began in August 0f 2021 and ends in May of 2022. Each cohort member receives a stipend of $1000.00. We are preparing for the next cohort and need our next group of girls sponsored. We hope you will be a sponsor.
SLI hosts book giveaways throughout the year to promote literacy and social awareness. According to dosomething.org, “1 in 4 children in America grow up not learning how to read and about 85% of the juveniles who face trial in the juvenile court system are functionally illiterate”. The books in our giveaways are for all age groups but have a special focus on the youth. The books are centered on learning, advocacy, leadership, and etc. Parents and guardians love the book giveaways as they sometimes get to have a book or get a book for their child. They understand the importance of literacy and supporting the youth in learning and appreciate you for purchasing the books on the list.
SLI is passionate about supporting educators through teacher appreciation projects. Our largest one to date gifted over 100 teachers home care kits. The kits included essentials such as laundry and dish detergents, fabric softener sheets, hand sanitizer, and toothpaste. SLI conducts these appreciation projects to bring awareness to the dire need for an increase in teachers’ salaries. Nationally, teachers are paid 19.2% less than similarly educated professionals according to the National Education Association. Teacher pay also decreased across the nation by 4.5% this year. The Economic Policy Institutes reports teachers are taking on second jobs and living with roommates to make ends meet. With your help, SLI can continue the home care kits and eventually provide a monthly stipend to some teachers.
I hope this letter has provided a clear picture of the current mission of Servant Leaders Institute. Thank you so much for your time and support. Please stay in touch and consider joining SLI in the implementation of its initiatives. Happy New Year! Happy Holidays! Many blessings to you and yours.
